Yvonne Githiora

Biography

Yvonne Githiora is PhD student in the Department of Earth and Climate Sciences and a research fellow on the Future African Savannas (AFAS) project at the University of Nairobi (UoN). A trained ecologist, her research work explores linkages between ecosystem services,
human communities, and climate change in African ecosystems. She holds B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Conservation Biology from the University of the Western Cape and the University of Cape Town, South Africa. Yvonne’s main research interests are in the link between
communities and ecosystems as well as how scientific information can be used to inform development planning and processes. She has previously worked in public policy, climate change mainstreaming, and water and ecosystems research. Yvonne is passionate about making a positive impact in environmental, social and education issues in Africa. Working in the environment and climate change sector in government, NGO and academia has given Yvonne a wealth of experience as well as a range of perspectives about how these challenges can be met both in policy and implementation. She hopes to bring these experiences to inform programme and project design at Conscious Kenya, with a particular focus on how the environmental programmes can support sustainable livelihoods in targeted communities.
